A regular meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club was held on September 24 at 7:00 PM at the Shelby County Red Cross Office, President Bill Davidson KW4J presiding. Members present were identified by name and call sign. Visiting were Bill Bates KD7MKD and Reuben Burch WA4ZEN.

MEC Tom Appleby, W4TCA reminded members of upcoming emergency training events: SET on October 3rd. and Operation Highball. Tom reviewed the recent drill at Alabama Power Company Wilsonville Steam Plant and commended members who participated.

President's Annual Report 2008-2009

The SCARC Bylaws requires the most recent past President to make a report concerning how the Club fared during his watch, so I am making this one via the blog so that it is available for everyone. I will make it short and concise; actually, it could be summed up by saying that it was a good term and that the Club accomplished a lot. We did not do some of the things that I had a vision; instead, we some other things that I did not imagine.

October 2008 saw that the Club was actively involved with the ARRL Simulated Emergency Test which showed that the members are commited to being responsive to communication emergencies. In fact, Alabama ranked fourth in the nation and Shelby County was the lead county! SCARC proved to be committed to emcomm training and a lot was done through the year, such as SKYWARN and the ARRL ARECC courses. Many Club members attended the 'fifth Thursday' emcomm training which was usually hosted by the ARRL AEC's for both Jefferson and Shelby Counties. Preparations for the 2009 SET are now underway.

Much volunteer work was accomplished by the Club members to complete the Shelby County EMA radio shack which is now functional except for the installation of the backup hf vertical, which should be installed before the end of this year. New equipment, such as the noise-cancelling head sets, have been inventoried into the EMA equipment lists. The EMA shack includes state-of-the-art equipment, including DSTAR and other digital capability. Work has been planned on the associated BBQ shed but is waiting for permission from the Alabama Highway Department, who owns the property. We moved into our new facility at the Shelby County Red Cross Office and currently are planning the installation of two uhf/vhf radios there. Work has also begun on the Shelby County Hospital radio room. The radio's have been received and a rapport has been established with the contractor personnel, so that project will become active shortly.

The Christmas party was a resounding success with an excess of fifty people attending.
Special thanks goes to Patty King AJ4RO for her work on it. The annual February Tail Gate was also another successful undertaking for this term, and Bob Thomas KC4AF deserves a lot of credit for making sure everything went well. SCARC was supportive of the OMIK convention which was held in Birmingham during July. Club members were active in educating the public on the switch to digital TV. A booth was prepared and manned by Club members to demonstrate amateur radio at the Alabaster Arts and Crafts Show during June.

Joe Ford K4NVJ led the VEC as many tests were given and passed for new amateur radio operators as well as upgrades. Ron Andrews KC0I is a dedicated teacher and mentor who has provided a way for many local residents to become active in amateur radio. John Murphy deserves special recognition due to his masterful work maintaining the Club's web site. The Club and amateur radio in general has benefitted by the work of these dedicated hams.

Several interesting programs were presented on the 'Fourth Thursday' meetings and were coordinated by Jim McLester W4YXU.

A change to the ByLaws was suggested and proprely implemented to make the 146.98Mhz Repeater Trustee a Club officer. No change was made to the duties and responsibilites of the office. A new repeater controller was installed to allow remote linking with other local repeaters during disasters. Also, the old, unused repeater was sold and the funds deposited into the Repeater Fund.

In summary, the Club has increased its emcomm capability both materially and training but there is still considerable work to do. The uhf/vhf repeater system is functioning better than in the past; however antenna work is required to service more areas in the southern part of the county. The Club is becoming more availiable for emcomm exercises and actual service; this should continue to be stressed. The Club has a lot of talent available and it is hoped that it will be tapped even more for the upcoming term.

The Shelby County Amateur Radio Club held its regular meeting on September 10 at 7:00 PM at the American Red Cross Office on Valleydale Road with Vice President Jim McLester, W4YXU presiding. Members present were identified by name and call letters.

Tom Appleby, W4TCA, MEC announced two upcoming events. The VHF simplex exercise will be held on 9/12 with details available on the Club website. A simulated emergency exercise will be held on 9/15 at the Alabama Power Company Wilsonville Plant and will entail a chemical spill. Details for this are also on the Club website.

Repeater Trustee Bob Thomas, KC4AF said work was continuing on a second repeater site, and a donation of hardline by the Alabaster Fire Department was received.

Webmaster John David Murphy, KA4ZXL asked for suggestions regarding the Club web page.

One new member application was read and approved by vote Chuck Couchkell, N4MLN.

Bob Thomas, Nominating Committee Chairman read the list of nominees for 2009-2010 club offices. Ballots were distributed to all members present in good standing. Completed ballots were counted by the Committee and the following results were announced:

SCARC Meeting Minutes August 27, 2009

The regular meeting of the County Amateur Radio Club was held at the American Red Cross Office on Valleydale Road in Hoover, Al. Vice President Jim McAlester, W4YXU asked atttendees to identify themselves by name and call letters

There were no new member applications or Treasurer's report.

No visitors were in attendance.

Tom Appleby, W4TCA, Mgr. EC reminded the Club that a simulated emergency drill is planned for September 15 at the Alabama Power Company Wilsonville Plant and will simulate a chlorine gas leak. On September 12 an ARES FM simplex exercise will take place. Data sheets and further information would be available on the SCARC web page.

Bob Thomas, KC4AF, Repeater Trustee reported a donation of hardline coax by the Alabaster Fire Department, and the receipt of antennas by the Birmingport Fire Department. Bob stated that approximately $600 is needed for secondary repeater equipment. He also announced that Les Rayburn would not be able to accept the nomination of MEC.

Joe Ford, K4NVJ announced that the next testing session would be on September 6.

A slide show presentation was given on antenna basics and discussion followed.

Tom Appleby W4TCA, Emergency Communications Manager reported on his meeting with Shelby County Medical Center and the status of their amateur communications setup. Tom also announced plans for a simulated drill to be held at the Alabama Power Company Wilsonville Steam Plant on September 15. This will consist of a supposed chemical spill and will include participation of Shelby and Jefferson County emergency personnel. The club VHF and UHF equipment will be utilized.

Bob Thomas KC4AF, Repeater Trustee, said that an antenna swap was planned with Birminghamport and that equipment had been offered to the Club by the Alabaster Fire Marshall. Jim McLester gave information on work being done for a second repeater..

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, VE Testing stated that the last session produced 4 technicians, 1 general and 1 extra class.

President Davidson named Bob Thomas and Jim McLester to a web site committee to assist and support John David Murphy KA4ZXL, Webmaster for simplifying the Club's web site.

Ron Andrews KC0I said he needed students for license instruction.

Soapbox About Profanity

This is not another complaint about profanity on the air waves, even though that is a sore subject with me. Instead, I really want to vent about some emails that I have recently seen between several of the local hams. Actually I was just a copy on the correspondence but it disturbed me enough that I wanted to vent about it. The writers are respected local hams who I personally know, and I think that is what made me so sensitive. My respect for these individuals has dropped considerably but I hope it is a temproary situation. I rarely hear profanity among my many ham buddies, perhaps an occasional off-color joke but no constant raw language - certainly not like what we hear on TV. In most gatherings - big and small - the converastion could be held inside a church. So I was shocked when I opened an email and read a foul-mouthed dissertation which was a complaint concerning a received email. The ham was upset and incensed over its contents and vented in an improper way. To make matters worse, the respondent sent an email replying in like manner with similar language. I felt ashamed for both of them. They are intelligent hams who know better. I just hope that they do not convey this demeanor when on the air waves.

Proper language should be used at all times lest we forget and use profanity when it could really damage something as important as our images as amteur radio operators.

SCARC Meeting Notes - July 23, 2009

A SCARC regular meeting was opened at 7:00 PM Thursday July 23, 2009 at the Shelby County Red Cross office by President Bill Davidson who asked the attendees to introduce themselves by name and radio call sign. There were no visitors.

President Davidson reminded the group of upcoming events of amateur radio interest including the Cullman Hamfest on Saturday, July 25 and the Huntsville Hamfest on August 15 and 16. Members were also reminded of the upcoming elections in September.

Vice President Jim McLester announced that the next program night would be by Bob Thomas KC4AF concerning public relations and the radio amateur. He also provided an status update on the repeater and associated work, including a possible swap of an unused antenna for one that will work better for Club use. He also informed the Club of some ARES training that will take place at this venue next Thursday July 30.

Treasurer Jack Evans KC4PZA reported on two bills. One was a $210.00 bill for food consumed during the past Field Day. It was already budgeted and will be paid. The second bill for approximately $500 for a new laptop computer for use at the Shelby County EMA. This will free the existing computer from having to try to balance HF digital functions from UHF/VHF digital work during emergencies. A motion was made, seconded and passed to pay this bill.

VE Testing Chairman Joe Ford K4NVJ reminded everyone that the next VE Test Session would be at this venue on August 2 starting at 2:00 PM.

Jack Evans reported that the work at the Shelby County EMA BBQ shed is waiting for the OK from the Alabama Highway Department, who are the actual owners. The building has been cleaned up and is ready for the work to begin. SCARC will provide the manpower and the Highway Department will provide the material.

Ron Andrews KC0I acknowledged two new instructors for teaching amateur radio classes - Patty King AJ4RO and John Murphy KA4ZXL. (Since that time I have proposed that Ron become the chairman of the newly-formed SCARC Education Committee in hope that will help him use the Club assets for amateur radio education and growth.)

A program by the Club web guru John Murphy explaining the new VE Web Page then commenced.

SCARC Meeting Minutes for July 9, 2009

A SCARC regular business meeting owas called to order at teh Shelby County Red Cross Office by President Bill Davidson KW4J at 7:00 PM. Members were welcomed and recognized by name and call sign. One visitor, Denise Wilson was present.

President Davidson reminded club members of the upcoming OMIK Convention to be held in Birmingham on July 17 thru 19 at The Doubletree Hotel in downtown Birmingham.

The election committee report will be given at the August 13 Club meeting.

The Huntsville Hamfest is August 15-16 and the Cullman Hamfest is July 25.

President Davidson presented the ATTABOY Award to two club members for their “above and beyond” work for SCARC as teh two past year Field Day Chairmen - Joe Ford, K4NVJ (2008) and Marcus Thomas KF4YHP (2009).

Vice President Jim McLester, W4YXU reported that the program for the July 23 meeting will be given by Bob Thomas , KC4AF, subject – ARRL Public Relations for Amateur Operation.

Tom Appleby, W4TCA, EC Mgr. announced the following emergency training opportunities:

July 14 Homeland Security Communications vehicle demonstration (Tuscaloosa)
July 30 ARES Training session (At the Shelby Red Cross Office)

Club members were reminded that ARRL renewal memberships should be made thru SCARC for Club compensation.

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, VE Testing Chairman reported that 9 applicants were tested at the last session, Testing schedule being the 1st. Sunday of each month. Two SCARC members were recognized for their upgrade to Extra Grade - Patty King AJ4RO and John Murphy. KA4ZXL.

Bob Thomas, KC4AF, Repeater Trustee said that work was being done to improve repeater dead spots in the Chelsea area. A discussion among members followed. Jim McLester, W4YXU said that a new power supply at the repeater side had been successfully tested and run.

Patty King, AJ4RO, Red Cross Liaison, told of training plans available to club members.

Terry Dillard KI4YZI SC EMC Liaison showed completed info sheets on radio equipment at the Shelby County EMA location

John Murphy, Webmaster said several changes to links on the club web site had been made and encouraged members to make use of the SCARC web page.

President Davidson recognized Jim Niven KI4BRE for his work at the barbecues stand at the Shelby County EMA location,

Marcus Thomas, KF4YHP, Field Day Chairman reported a successful and enjoyable Field Day. The club earning a total of 3,880 points for the operation.

Randy Wilson. W4VIP, suggested that the club investigate changing the web site host with the idea of monetary savings. President Davidson asked Wilson to pursue this idea.

Bob Thomas, KC4AF moved that the club give an honorary membership to Jeff Glass N4GEG for the club’s use of the 146.29 repeater, The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

SCARC Meeting Minutes for June 25, 2009

The regular meeting of SCARC was held at the Shelby County EMA building in Columbiana. Roll call of members was by name and call sign.
There were 22 members present.

President Bill Davidson, KW4J called for reports by Officers and Committee Chairmen and items of unfinished business.

The OMIK Convention will be held on July 20-21 and SCARC members will attend and/or assist as needed.

Refurbishment of the Shelby County EMA BBQ shed is continuing and a work day will be announced for completion of this project.

Marcus Thomas KF4YHP, Field Day Chairman outlined plans for the upcoming event. Duties of Station Managers, antenna installation and food preparation were discussed. President Davidson stated that operating details will be the decision of the Field Day Chairman.

Members enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks prior to the meeting.

Minutes of SCARC meeting of June 11, 2009

A regular meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club was called to order by President Bill Davidson KW4J who asked the attendees to introduce themselves. One visitor was recognized - Ed Tyler KI4GKS.

President Davidson reminded club members of upcoming events such as Field Day June 27-28 and the election of new club officers September 10.

It was announced that Don Tunstill W4NO of Huntsville is a silent key.

President Davidson noted that present predictions estimate Cycle 24 to peak in 2013 instead of 2011.

The July QST lists Alabama as the number 4 in the nation for the 2008 SET.

Vice President Jim McAlester W4YXU gave an outline to the next two Club programs.

MEC Tom Appleby W4TCA enumerated emergency related activities that he attended and outlined future emergency related exercises and meetings of interest to club members

Joe Ford, K4NVJ reported that 12 persons were present at the last testing session. He also announced that future testing for both BARC and SCARC will be at 2:00 PM on the first Sunday of each month starting in August and that the venue will be the Shelby County Red Cross Office.

W4SHL Repeater Trustee and Chairman Bob Thomas KC4AF said that back up batteries were now on line. They are designed to give several days of normal usage before failing. During Bob’s report, he called upon Jim McLester to outline a proposed set of repeater protocols which will give indication of the state of the power input to the repeater.

Bob Thomas also reported that four individuals indicated an interest in becoming Hams at the recent Alabaster CityFest and signed up for more information.

Patty King KI4MQI Red Cross Liaison reported recent meetings with Red Cross people and plans to attend Public Health Department training classes.

Terry Dillard, KI4YZI was named as Shelby County EMA.

John Murphy, Webmaster, KA4ZXL said that a power point program relating to the Extra Class License was available on the Club web page.

Ron Andrews KC0I introduced visitor Ed Tyler, KI4GKS. Ed is president of the Coosa Valley Radio Association, and told of the work being done in his area to educate amateur radio operators for being competent trainers.

President Davidson formally introduced the need for a motion to change the Club Constitution and By-laws in order to make the W4SHL Repeater Trustee a Club Officer. No changes in responsibility are to be included. (This motion introduction was in accordance with the current Constitution and By-Laws.) Jack Evans made a motion that this action should be made and it was seconded. After a call for discussion, the vote was cast and the motion passed unanimously by a show of hands.

Minutes of 5/28/2009 – Shelby County Amateur Radio Club

A regular meeting of the SCARC was called to order at 7:00 PM by Vice President Jim McLester W4YXU who requested that the attendees introduce themselves. One visitor was present - Sean Paul, WN4BAN.

The May 14 meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club was called to order by President Bill Davidson KW4J at 6:50 PM with the attendees introducing themselves. Two visitors were present: Bruce Tension WB4AU and Sean Paul WN4BAN.

Volunteers are needed for CityFest on June 6.

Davidson also reported for Patty King KJ4FTZ. Permission has been granted for a tower installation at the Shelby County Red Cross Office, and a discussion concerning the logistical status ensued.

Webmaster John Murphy KA4ZXL said refinements and additions to the Club web page are in the works.

Jack Evans reported that the barbecue shed behind the Shelby County EMA had been cleaned up and was ready for the Club to inspect and estimate the material and work needed to complete the refurbishment. He asked for volunteers to meet him a the site for the inspection.

At the May 21 meeting members will be asked to vote on the proposal to make the Club Repeater Trustee a Club Officer.

At 7:00 PM a regular meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club at the American Red Cross Office on Valleydale Road was called to order by President Bill Davidson KW4J who asked the attendees to identify themselves by name and call sign. Alex Davies announced the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure to be held on April 25 and asked for volunteer radio operators to assist with the race.

Program Chairman and Vice President Jim McLester W4YXU presented an ARRL Power Point program on Repeater Basics.

SCARC Meeting Notes - April 9, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Davidson at 6:50pm and the attendees introduced themselves; there was one visitor, Denise Wilson.

President davidson them outlined some upcoming events - the Barc Ham fest for May 2-3, the Dayton Ham fest May 15-18, Alabsaster Citifest June 6, Field Day June 27-28. Also the June 25 meeting will feature food and drink at the EMA site.

VP Jim McLester, W4YXU reported that he has lined up program nights for the next few months.

Treasurer Jack Evans, KC4PZA, gave our bank account balances, savings account ($3,725.89, checking ($110.85) and repeater account ($1,278.35). There are no outstanding bills.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, was substituting for Secretary Mike Thomason, K4FQF, announced that the Birmingham News is still continuing to cover our meeting announcements.

President Davidson gave gave an overview of the ARECC001 course. which is scheduled for April 18-19 at the Jefferson County EMA.

One new member, Andy Brakefield KJ4JKG was recognized.

VE Chairman, Joe Ford, K4NVJ, announced that on the last SCARC testing, 5 people were tested. Of that, 4 tech passed their test and 1 tech was upgraded to general.

Repeater Chairman Bob Thomas, KC4AF, mentioned that the next project would be to have better coverage in the Chelsea area.

Red Cross Liaison Patty King, KJ4FTZ, told the group about the General license classes that Ron Andrews KC0I, is currently holding at the Red Cross building. She also asked that we club members all leave the meeting room clean.

President Davidson said that a new Shelby County EMA liaison would me announced at the club's next meeting.

The Club has a booth at the Alabaster Cityfest, scheduled for June 6. A volunteer sign-up sheet was passed around.

President Davidson updated the attendees about the SCARC By-law and Constitution changes to change the status of the Repeater Trustee to officer level. The BOD approved the change and it will be emailed to the Club members for their approval. The proposed changes will be voted upon at the May 7 regular meeting.

President Davidson asked for volunteers for the Election Committee.

Ron Andrews KC0I gave the group details about the above mentioned General license classes that he is giving on Tuesday nights at the Red Cross building from 6 to 7pm.

Marcus Thomas, KF4YHP, the Field Day chairman, gave an overview of his progress and asked for input from the club.

Barbara McLester, W5YXU told the group that she is currently designing t-shirts for the club and asked for their input as to the design and color. She may bring samples to a future club meeting.

A Regular Meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club was held at the American Red Cross office on Valleydale Road in Hoover. The meeting was called to order by President Bill Davidson KW4J who asked the attendees to introduce themselves. A total of 30 members were present and 1 visitor – Randy Wilson.

The President gave information and details on several upcoming events, including the Alabaster Cityfest on June 9, ARRL Field Day on June 29 and OMIK National Convention on July 15-18.

Officer reports were suspended in order to give sufficient time for the program.

The Program was given by Joe Ford K4NVJ – A display and demonstration of the Elecraft K3 Transceiver. A question and answer period followed.

A regular meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club was held at the Shelby County EMA office in Columbiana. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by President Bill Davidson KW4J. Members were introduced by name and call sign.One visitor was present, Nathan Reese.

President Davidson announced that the Alabama QSO party would be held on June 7 and suggested participation as a Club Station.

The Ft. Walton Fl Hamfest will be held on March 31.

The Dayton Hamvention will be on 5/15-5/18. ARRL Field Day will be the week end of June 27.

Tom Appleby W4TCA. Shelby County EMC gave details on upcoming emergency preparedness events.

Joe Ford K4NVJ – VE Testing Chairman said 9 applicants attended the last testing session. He informed the Club that BARC VE testing will also take place at the Red Cross Office. April test date is the first Friday in April at 6:00 P.M.

Bob Thomas KC4AF – Repeater Chairman stated that better coverage is necessary for the Chelsea area and probably an additional remote might be helpful.

The President said the Club and BARC will pool their money and buy an 100 dollar ad in the OMIK convention program which will be in July. It was suggested that both clubs assist in this event if called on.

The Alabaster Crafts Fair will be held on June 6 and SCARC will have a table/display.
Bob Thomas said volunteers are needed to man the booth.

Marc Thomas KF4YHP accepted the position of 2009 Field Day Chairman.

President Davidson announced that annual elections will be held in July and a nominating committee will be named shortly. He asked for any volunteers for the committee contact him.

Minutes of SCARC meeting of February 26, 2009

The regular meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club was called to order by the President Bill Davidson at 7:00 P.M. Members attending were recognized by name and call sign. One visitor was present and was recognized - Al Schilling.

President Davidson said that the Club would have a table at the Birminghamfest, and payment for the space had been made. He also announced that he has obtained the ARRL handouts for the Alabaster Arts and Crafts Day on June 6, 2009. The Treasurer is currently processing the request for a space. Bob Thomas KC4AF asked for volunteers to assist with this function.

Bob stated that 2 new D Star repeaters were now active in the area. One is located at Red Mountain and the other is near Anniston (Coldwater Mountain Repeater Association). Details are forthcoming.

Vice President Jim McLester W4YXU is working a program schedule for the Club’s second meeting nights.

A regular meeting of the Shelby County Amateur Radio Club at the Valleydale Red Cross office was called to order by President Bill Davidson Kw4J at 7:00 P.M. Members were recognized by name and call and Steve Ambrose was welcomed as a visitor.

President Davidson noted that a Field Day Chairman was needed and requested a volunteer. He also suggested that the regular business meetings include short programs on amateur radio whenever time will allow and the consensus was agreeable.

VE Test Chairman Joe Ford K4NVJ reported last testing session had 5 applicants present and they all passed giving the radio community 3 new General Class and 2 new Technicians. The next test session will be held at BARC on March 1.

Bob Thomas KC4AF. Repeater Chairman said that work continues on back-up antenna for Pinnacle Point. The old repeater has been repaired, installed and tested at Pinnacle Point plans are to sell this unit and use the money towards purchase of a new back-up repeater.

Red Cross liaison Patti King KJ4FTZ met with the Shelby County Red Cross Director Mary Kinard about the installation of radio equipment at their office.

John Murphy, Webmaster said his main computer was back from repair and the club web page was running smoothly.

President Davidson said the FCC and the Red Cross may call on club members to help the public help when the transition from analog TV to digital TV is made. There is very little information presently available as to what the assistance will entail.

Ron Andrews KC0I introduced one of his students Terry Christian who is presently studying tech license requirements. President Davidson recognized Ron for his good work with license instruction.

Jack Evans informed the Club members of the Alabaster CityFest which will be on June 6. This will be a good time and place for the Club to promote amateur radio so the attendees voted to pay for a table and man it.

SCARC Minutes January 8, 2009

The meeting was called to order by the President Bill Davidson KW4J who asked the attendees to introduce themselves. There was one visitor, Terry Dillard KI4YZI, who later submitted his application and was voted into membership.

Tentative Field Day plans were discussed and a Chairman is to be named at a later meeting. Volunteers are encouraged for this project. Venue will probably be the Shelby EMA as it proved to be very successful last year. Special thanks were given to Joe Ford N4NVJ for his great job last year as Field Day Chairman.

Vice President Jim McLester W4YXU outlined the next few programs and said the he is also considering some short programs for our business meetings. Jack Evans KC4PZA will give the program for the January 22 meeting concerning traffic handling. The February program is scheduled to be a demonstration of the Elecraft K3 Transceiver by Joe Ford.

Tom Appleby, KI4PPR submitted a detailed outline of Planned Emergency Communications Planning for 2009 with copies for Officers and Board Members.

The President read Jeff Drew N4JDU’s letter concerning the OMIK convention to be held in Birmingham in July 15-18 and said that SCARC would assist as needed. He also reminded the Club members that the ARES on line data base is now up and running.

Joe Ford N4NVJ, VE Testing Chairman said that the next testing date was the 1st. Friday in February. Also, the testing fee is now $15.00.

Repeater Chairman Bob Thomas KC4AF said that a second repeater site was planned for Pinnacle Point and would be in the works later this year.

The President announced that the new Red Cross Liaison is Patty King KI4FTZ.

The Club membership approved $800.00 for the purchase of a second Arcom controller and a uhf/vhf transceiver.

By unanimous vote the Club approved free membership for the year 2009 for members John Murphy KA4ZXL and Marcus Thomas KF4YHP for their outstanding service to the Club and members.

The Boy Scouts will hole a merit badge day on January 31 at Oak Mountain High School.

Net Manager Rod Scott N1YZ reported that the 2008 total check-ins for the Tuesday net is 1003 with an average session being 32.4. Rod presented certificates of appreciation to Net Managers.

The President noted that member Charles Spanos N4DKE was in Brookwood Hospital following surgery and asked for prayers for his recovery.

SCARC Minutes November 11, 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Davidson at 7:00 PM and them attendees were requested to introduce themnslelves. Two visitors were present – Larry Sharp W4DMW and Rich Ranson N9YAY.

SCARC will not meet on November 27 or December 25 due to Thanksgiving and Christmas. The SCARC Christmas party will be on December 11.

Vice President Jim McLester said the January 8 program will be NTS traffic handling.

President Davidson reported that Club Treasurer Jack Evans KC4PZA was recuperating from shoulder surgery and would be back with us shortly.

Tom Appleby, KI4PPR announced that there will be a fire burn conducted by the LEPC on Saturday Nov 20 to eradicate certain underbrush areas at Oak Mountain State Park. He reported there will be a county wide emergency training session for Jefferson and Shelby Counties in the spring.

VE Testing Committee Chairman Joe Ford K4NVJ reported that the November 2 VE test session brought 1 new ham and 1 upgrade. Then next test session is set for Friday December 5 at the Shelby Red Cross Office at Pelham.

Repeater Chairman Bob Thomas KC4AF reported that the repeater was functioning satisfactorily.

President Davidson reported that installation of station equipment at the Hoover Red Cross office will proceed after the first of the year.

Webmaster John MurphyKA4ZXL said his main computer was still in shop but he was able to update the SCARC web page.

Due to a vacancy on the Board of Directors, President Richardson called for volunteers to fill that spot. There were no volunteers from the floor so the President recommended John Outland K3FP as Director. This was approved by the membership.

The vacancy on the Board of Directors was discussed and John Outland K3FP was elected to rill remaining term for Lee Aured KI4NMD who is now Sk.

The painting of the barbecue shed at the EMC building was delayed until spring. it was suggested that possibly a special event station be set up for this project.

Rich Ranson, N9YAY new DEC for the Alabama section was introduced and welcomed as a visitor to our meeting.

Correspondence from Les Rayburn detailed plans for establishing amateur radio stations at area hospitals, stating that grants had been used to purchase equipment for this use.

Bob Thomas KC4AF said the annual swap meet would be held at the park in Helena on the 1st. Saturday in February, 2009. He also asked for any interest in building a screwdriver antenna as per outlined on the web page DK3 screwdriver antenna, possibly a future program and building session. VP Jim McLester was asked to consider this for a program series for the upcomingmonths.
Steven Moss KB4FKN announced that a Skywarn training session would be held this Saturday at the BJCC with Brian Peters instructing.

VP Jim McLester W4YXU, Informed the group that Les Rayburn, N1LF will be present at tonight's meeting to present his talk on the ICS Format and Structure.

Secretary Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, read a card from Mary Kinard thanking all of the volunteers who helped out with the Hurricane Gustav evacuees in Columbiana. He also read an email asking for volunteers at the Piedmont Run in November and he reported that the Birmingham News is continuing to announce the Club's meetings.

Hub Harvey N4HUB, acting for the MEC, reported that the SET exercise will commence on October 4th and canvassed the attendees for volunteers.

President Davidson gave his year end report citing the many accomplishments that the club has achieved over the past year.

No new member application were received at this time, however three applications from our visitors were turned in afterwards and will be voted on at the next meeting.

President Davidson gave an update on the Red Cross Equipment Installation status. He told the group that the equipment still needs to be installed. He also told the group that the EMA BBQ shed still needs to be painted.

Repeater Chairman Bob Thomas, KC4AF, announced that a new repeater radio is coming. He also canvassed the group concerning the format used by the 146.98 repeater.

VP McLester told the club that the radio is an ICOM dual band and gave a short talk as to the functions of this new radio.

President Davidson asked the group about a date for the SCARC Christmas party and December 11, 2008 stqrting at 6:00 PM was selected. It was also agreed that, due to the holidays, there will be no meeting on November 27th or December 25th.

President Davidson went on to say that the club will have a Skywarn training class on October 23 at the Sheriff's Training Center.

John Outland, K3FP, announced that the Montgomery Hamfest, scheduled for November 8th would be dedicated to Pete Sides W4AUP.

A very informative program on the ICS Format was presented by Les Rayburn N1LF.

Secretary Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, reported that the Birmingham News is continuing to run our announcements. He also said that the FCC has been a victim of phissing. There were will be Fleagate this Saturday September 13 at Gadsden.

MEC Rod Scott, N1YZ, reported that the Butternut antenna and ICOM 2820 radio have been delivered to the Shelby County EMA and need to be installed.

President Davidson reminded the Club that the SCARC VE test would be given October 3rd. A D-Star Seminar will be held by BARC at a future date. The BARC Christmas Party will be given Dec 4th. The Montgomery Hamfest will be held on November 9.

Repeater Chairman Bob Thomas, KC4AF reported that the Arcom Controller has been online for the past 2 days and Jim McLester said that the controller has been picking up some noise and that some of its features have not been turned on. Bob added that a newer vhf/uhf radio is needed to take advantage of the Arcomm Controller's functions.

Red Cross Liaison Jack Evans said that he and Hub Harvey N4HUB met with the Red Cross yesterday and Hub gave a report about the recent hurricane evacuee shelter in Columbiana. Jack mentioned that the club needs to install some radio gear at that location at a later date.

Web Master John Murphy, KA4ZXL, told the group that a new call sign link has been set up on the club's web page.

Bill Davidson announced that SKYWARN classes will be held at the Jefferson County EMA on October 18th and November 8th. He canvassed the attendees for interest in asking for a future class at our location. Several hands were raised. He reminded everyone that the SET exercise is to be held on October 4th & 5th. Les Rayburn told the group that it will be a tri-county event and the exact date may change.

Les Rayburn announced that he will sent out a list of applicable frequencies related to the evacuations of the Texas coast due to Hurricane Ike. 3935khz is the national hurricane frequency.

Hub Harvey told the group that the EVA (Alabama) ARC will hold a foxhunt on Saturday, September 13th.

Nadine Evans asked for all members to assist her with composing the club's scrapbook. She asked for any old pictures, articles, etc.

President Davidson announced that the Red Cross equipment needs to be installed soon. He plans to set up a committee for that purpose and asked for volunteers to serve on it. He also said that the renovation of the BBQ shed at the EMA HQ will be discussed at a later date.

Secretary Frank Hoult, KI4VVI presented an email from John Franklin asking the club for assistance in repairing his radio. No one was able to help. He also informed the group about the upcoming AMSAT Symposium coming to Atlanta, GA in October and that he had mailed a sympathy card to Jerry Fiore N1JF after the last meeting.

MEC Rod Scott, N1YZ, told the group that Mindy at the EMA has requested a correct contact list from the club. He announced a weather briefing at the EMA headquarters (Columbiana) on Friday (August 29th) at 3pm concerning emcomm preparations for Hurricane Gustav.

President Davidson announced that Les Rayburn, N1LF has been installed as the Alabama Section EC. He also asked the group if anyone would be willing to be placed on a new "Elmer List" to be placed on the club's website. Bob Thomas, KC4AF suggested that all members who have been licensed for 10 or more years be placed on that list. This list is in response to an idea made by Frank Hoult to help all newly licensed members.

Repeater chairman Bob Thomas KC4AF reported that the new Arcom controller will be installed next week on the club's 146.98 MHz repeater.

Election Committee chairman Ken Caruso KS4NX reported the slate of candidates for the upcoming election; he asked all officers to give a job description. Hub Harvey N4HUB put his name in for the MEC position. Bob Thomas announced that Mike Thomason K4FQF has been nominated for the Secretary position.

President Davidson gave a report on the status of the installation of equipment at the Red Cross HQ. There are 3 VHF/UHF that need to be installed at a later date. He reminded the Club of the planned SET exercise on October 4th & 5th. BARC will have their VE testing on September 6th. SCARC elections will be held on September 11th (next meeting). The next Shelby County EMA tutorial will be held on October 30th.

Hub Harvey gave a slide presentation on his recent disaster relief efforts in Minnesota and Iowa.

Training at Shelby EMA

Congratulations to John Wilder WB4CCQ for conducting the first training session at the Shelby County EMA office last night, July 31. He went through a tutorial on the installed radio equipment and demonstrated several pieces to the 14 SCARC attendees. He also held a tutorial on message handling using the ARRL message form which will be used most of the time. Also, he explained the need for logging and exhibited a proposed logging form. He will be holding a second training session on October 30 for any of the Club members who could not make the first one.

In 2009 John hopes to conduct a different session during which he will teach the members how to use the computer programs such as WinLink2000 (Air Mail) and several others. We are all looking forward to it.

Repeater Chairman Bob Thomas, KC4AF, told the club that he is currently working on the repeater's batteries with 3 good cells and 3 other cells that need some rehabilitation work. he said that work is slow. VP Jim McLester spoke about the ARCOM controller.

Red Cross Liaison Jack Evans said that the Red Cross needs blood donations. A club-wide blood drive was discussed, but it was agreed that individual members could donate on their own.

Shelby EMA Liaison John Wilder, WB4CCQ, said that the Winlink is up and running, but no contacts have been made yet. He mentioned that the club could use the 5th thursday of the 4 months of the year for an EMA training session. The first session would be July 31, 2008.

Webeb master John Murphy, KA4ZXL, gave an update on the club's web site, including the new links.

Field Day Chairman Joe ford gave a summation of the last Field Day - 4 stations with a total of 1,383 points. That figure exceeded the club's last Field Day in 2006.

New Business -
President Davidson said that the EMA building is finished and that a planning committee is needed to begin work on the Red Cross building.
He also said that a nominating committee for the 2009 officers will be formed in August. He will ask for 5 members to serve. Anyone interested needs to contact President Davidson.

President Davidson also mentioned about the upcoming Cullman ham fest on July 26th and the SCARC Elections on September 11th.

Field Day Was Fun!

SCARC had 2008 Field Day at the Shelby County EMA at Columbiana this past weekend and it was a lot of fun and a definite learning experience. Thanks to this year's FD Chairman Joe Ford K4NVJ things went smoothly and we were able to have four stations going, making us 4F for the contest. There was only minor interference between the stations which worked the entire 24 hour span. A modified ICS format was implemented to get the participants used to working under emcomm rules which have been adopted by most emergency serving organizations, such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Home Security, etc. Cooperation and team work abounded during setup and takedown. All participants are commended on the way that the site was policed, as there was very little trash to be removed during takedown.

The food was supurb, especially the Boston butts cooked on the spot by Alex Davies W4AVD and the fine Sunday morning breakfast by Ken Caruso KS4NX. A special thanks goes to Marcus Thomas KF4YHP who donated a huge ice cooler which and filled it with an almost never-ending supply of drinks and ice.

I hope everyone had as good a time as I did, and I am already looking forward to 2009 Field Day!

Repeater Courtesey

Last week I was at the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club (BARC) regular meeting when one of the officers began talking about something with which I am in complete agreement - the lack of courtesey on the UHF/VHF area repeaters. No, we do not have anyone that is intentionally rude or unfriendly, in fact I would say that we are usually very good to each other and nice to strangers. The problem is that we tend to use the repeaters the same way we use telephones. We forget that the sytem is shared by many users and is not a two-person operation. The main problem is that we (Yes, I'm just as guilty) tend to immdiately key up and talk without waiting for a break and ...just as bad...not letting the squelch tail die, thus not resetting the timer. I have noticed this not only on the two major club repeaters (BARC and SCARC) but also on the DStar repeater, which the situation was exacerbated to the point of total chaos during a net check-in. This used not to be a problem several years ago and in fact anyone caught doing quick key-ups or long talk-downs was verbally chastised. Some of us old folks remember the "Black Box Award."

I wish that I could say that this was a problem with amateur comminty as a whole but that is not the case. It is a local problem and needs to be addressed by the local ham community. In fact, Birmingham area hams are getting a bad reputation on account of it. Fortunately it is one that can be quickly cured with little effort, mainly we all need to observe radio courtesey by not immediately keying after the last transmission but wait long enough for the squelch tail to reset. It would also be good for each of us to remind each other when we are drifting away from proper etiquette.

Another point to keep in mind is that too-quick keying may hamper someone with an emergency from being able to access the repeater.

VP Jim McLester, W4YXU said that he would ask Don Green of the Shelby County EMA to give a program about the organization of the EMA. Jim said that other programs are in the works.

President Bill Davidson said that the Shelby EMA wants an accounting of all keys given out to our members. He also said that the EMA is working on internet access to their room where the Club's radio equipment is located.

President Bill Davidson said that all connectors have been installed at the Shelby EMA and that all major construction is now finished. He reminded everyone that there is still plenty inside work such as equipment hookup and programming as well as a HF antenna selection/installation. After that a traiing program will be initiated for the members to learn both the equipment and the emcomm procedures such as net operation.

Field Day Chairman Joe Ford suggested the club's next meeting to be held at 6pm at the EMA headquarters so that we can map out the site and it was so agreed. President Bill Davidson discussed food preparations for Field Day. He also discussed upcoming events including Field Day, the Cullman hamfest to be held on July 26th, and the club's election of officers to be held on September 11th. A nominating committee will be formed prior to the election date. He also discussed the Field Day format and more details of the club's next meeting.

Steven Moss, KB4FKN reported the recent Oak Mountain Search & Rescue exercise was well attended and went well.

Red Cross Liaison Jack Evans said that there will be a meeting next Wednesday from 4:40 - 5:00pm to plan the installation of the ARC's radios, cables and antennas.

Field Day Chairman Joe Ford said that the upcoming Field Day will be using 100% commercial power, that there will be some 3-5 stations, and that volunteers are needed for food preparation. He also said that the portable toilet will have to be arranged. Bill Davidson elaborated on the modified ICS Format planned to be used at Field Day. Marcus Thomas KF4YCP gave a report on the use of a freezer box for the field day.

One late visitor was announced: Kris Kirby from the UAB Amateur Radio Club.

Bill Davidson discussed the Alabama QSO Party details and opened the floor for further discussion on this matter. A vote was taken and it was decided not to participate as a Club.

Jack also informed theClub that a 40-80 meter verticle antenna is needed at the EMA headquarters. He also said that other equipment needs to be installed at the EMA headquarters.

Bill announced that 40 people were tested on Saturday at the Hamfest and 10 were tested on Sunday's session.

Repeater Chairman Bob Thomas (KC4AF) announced that the club needs to purchase a 2nd Kenwood repeater for $1500.00 as well as some feedline. He said that the Tuscaloosa link is working well and that an additional $480 is needed to purchase an ARCOM controller. A lengthy discussion concerning alternatives to these purchase followed. A vote on Ed Boutwell's(W4ZSB) proposal to purchase the controller was made and16 members voted yea, none voted nay, and there were 6 abstaining.

ARECC-001 Course Success!

I am proud to announce that the first-ever local ARECC-001 Course, "Introduction to Amateur Radio Emergency Communications", was held this past weekend with a total of 20 hams in attendance. All twenty passed the course and will be receiving their certificates from the ARRL. The class was started at 8:00 AM both days and lasted until 4:00 PM with short breaks and lunch. I thank each attendee for the courtesy and attentiveness displayed during the long lectures and discussion periods. This class establishes an emergency communications core that can work with the local served agencies more efficiently and in accordance with their needs. The majority of the attendees also completed the minimum IS series courses (IS-100, 200, 700, 800) that are rapidly being required to be associated with ARES and FEMA emcomm operations. Several signed up to have a state-wide ARES/FEMA badge which will help identify them during emergency/disaster conditions throughout Alabama. The course was taught by three ARRL Certified Instructors - Les Rayburn N1LF, Rod Scott N1YZ and Bill Davidson KW4J (that's me!)

Call to order was announced at 7:00pm No visitors were present.

Jim McLester, W4YXU, Vice President, announced that the program for the April 24th meeting is scheduled.

Jack Evans, KC4PZA, Treasurer, announced the following account balances:
Checking - 4102.37,
Savings - $2,595.53 ($465.00 of that amount is for the ARECC course) leaving a net balance of $2,130.53.
The special repeater fund balance is $919.08.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, secretary, announced that the March 13 minutes are available on the club's website and on paper.

MEC - Rod Scott, N1YZ, announced the formation of a committee to co-ordinate the move to the new Red Cross location and asked for volunteers.

Jack Evans announced that the red Cross will pay the club for all abandoned equipment ($659.95).

Bill Davidson, KW4j, president, announced that BARC needs volunteers for their Hamfest on May 3rd & 4th.

Bill also mentioned that there is new D-STAR software available to members on the internet at www.K4DSO.com

One new member, Russell Thomas, KV4S, was voted in as a new member.

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, VE co-ordinator, announced that the next licensing exam will be held at the SCARC headquarters on Friday, April 4th at 6:30pm.

Jack Evans, Red Cross liaison, announced that the move to the new location in still scheduled for April, but the exact date is not known at this time.

Rod Scott, web master, announced that John Murphy, has done allot of excellent work on the club's website.

Rod had no updates on any EMA construction.

Bill Davidson announced that Joe Ford will be the chairman of the 2008 Field Day. Joe announced that team leaders would be appointed at the next SCARC meeting. A change of venue for this year's Field Day was voted upon and passed. The new location will be at the EMA headquarters in Columbiana.

Bill also announced that the 2008 QSO party will be held June 7th. The club will be using the radios at the EMA headquarters. He asked other members to volunteer to go to other counties out of our area and set up base stations during that time.

Bill also announced that the new Red Cross location would be suite 5 & 6 at the South Lake Shopping Center on Valleydale Road.

John Outland, K3FP announced that the 100th birthday party for Pete Sides will be held May12th. Bus service to Montgomery will be available at 12:00 noon. Call Dave Sisco for more information at 822-3440.

A discussion of the VOAD followed.

Steven Moss announced that the Search & rescue practice drill for April 5th has been cancelled. He also announced that the Diabetes Bike Ride is still scheduled for April 26th and volunteers are still needed.

Bill passed around a list of current paid members and announced that all members who have not paid their dues by April 1st will be dropped from the club's roster.

The meeting adjourned at 7:55pm followed by a presentation by Jim McLester on "Digital Circuit Design (After you build it).

SCARC Minutes March 13,2008

The meeting came to order at 7:00 pm and the attendees intoduced themselves.

One visitor, Ed Manley W4AGA

Jim Mclester W4YXU, VP, TOld that the subject of the next program would be about digital circuit design. The following month's subject would be about antennas.

President Bill Davidson, KW4J, spoke in behalf of the Treasurer, Jack Evans, KC4PZA, who was absent. He reported the following balances
Savings $2,005.53
Checking $144.61
Repeater $919.08.

He also mentioned that memebers who have not paid their dues are now delinquent and will be dropped April 1.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, Secretary, told that the previous meeting minutes are on the club's website and that he had a paper copy for anyone to read.

Rod Scott, N1YZ, MEC, reported that some 20 members have signed up for the ARECC course so far. He also mentioned that he was expecting visitors from the CFlhoun County ARC and from ALERT. He so solicited ideas for a simplex net.

Bill Davidson passed around asked the club to update their E-mail addresses and passed around copies of th eAlabama ARES, the Tuscaloosa ARC (Hamsay) newsletter and a copy of the SC ARES net website.

Ed Manley was voted in as a new member. (Welcome aboard, Ed!)

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, reported that the next license exam would be April 4th. Due to the Red Cross projected April 1 move, the test venue may change. (Check 146.98 for details.)

Bob Thomas, KC4AF, reported that future repeater repeater improvement plans are estimated as $1500 for a back-up repeater $4500 for duplexers and a controller.

Bill Davidson reported that the anticipated 4/1 mover by the Red Cross is still on. The address is Suites 5 & 6.

Rod Scott, webmaster, praised John Murphy for his work-in-progress on the club's web site.

Bill Davidson alerted the members that the Field Day is coming up soon. He asked for a volunteer chairman. No one volunteered. Past FD problems were discussed. Joe Tucker Park was voted to be the FD site.. The FD organizational chart was discussed.

Ed Manley invited the club to join the BARC and/or the Zamora Shrine unit for Field Day but the Club voted to decline both gracious proposals.

John Outland K3FP spoke about the purpose of Field Day.

A lengthy open discussion about Field Day in general took place.

A motion to use the ICS format was passed.

A motion was passed to table the Field Day organization and planning until the next SCARC regular meeting.

Frank Hoult reported that the current membership drive has been completed. Bob Thomas mentioned that he deputize some members to solicit new members. Bill Davidson asked for all current members to "talk up" the club to other prospective members.

Bill Davidson suggested that the club abandon the rf cables when the Red Cross moves to their new location but transferthe antennas. No proposal to do this was brought to the membership but
it was tacitly agreed to do so.

John Outland mentioned that there would be a birgthday party for Pete Sides at Montgomery on 4/12. Bus service will be available.

Other hams of note:
Mike Ferguson passed away but the date was not mentioned.
Claude Grey is now in an assisted living facility

Steven Moss reported the following sevice events:
Storm Spotter school on 3/24
A diabetes bicycle run on 4/26
A search & rescue practice on 4/5.

SCARC Meeting Notes - February 28, 2008

Call to order was made at 7:00pm by Jim McLester,W4YXU, Vice President

1 visitor, James Niven, KI4BRE was present.

VP Jim McLester announced that tonight's program would be presented by Rod Scott, N1YZ. He also announced that next month's program would be about Digital Circuit Design and the following months program would be presented about antennas. that program would be present by Charles Spano.

MEC (Rod Scott), announced details abut the upcoming ARECC-01 class to be held at the Helena Public Library on March 29th & 30th.

Treasurer Jack Evans, KC4PZA, announced that we have 3 new members to sign up: Bob Wallace, KJ4AJR, Ron Arant, N4PHP, and our visitor, James Niven, KI4BRE.

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, VE coordinator, reported that the next SCARC testing date would be April 4, 2008.

Checking account - $84.61
ARECC-01 fund - $200.00

Repeater fund - $919.08 Bob Thomas, KC4AF, repeater committee, reported that he and his group[ are continuing work at the repeater site.

Red Cross Liaison, Jack Evans had nothing to report.

Shelby EMA liasion, John Wilder, WB4CCQ, thanked the EMA for allowing us to use their facilities. He also asked for volunteers and that the EMA needs another HF antenna.

Rod Scott, Web master, he is continuing to update our website. He had nothing to report on recent EMA construction.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, membership drive committee, reported that he recently mailed out 100 form letters and applications to prospective members. He also thanked Rod Scott for updating the membership page of the club's website.

Jim McLester announced that membership dues are due by April 1st or those members will be dropped from the club's rolls. He also announced that Ed Boutwell, W4ZSB, recently resigned as chairman of the Field Day committee and that a replacement would be needed. The motion for a replacement was tabled until the next meeting.

Ed Boutwell announced that Lee Aured, KI4NMD was still at home and that he was now able to communicate on the 2 meter band.

Ron Arant announced that on March 5th there would be an earthquake drill held in washington DC. at 11:30 am central time. He asked all club members to monitor 14.320 & 14.330 during that drill.

Steven Moss, KB4FKN, announced that on April 5th, there will be a Search & Rescue drill and that on April 26th there would be a Diabetes Bike Run held at 8am.

The club broke for intermission at 7:30pm. Rod Scott gave a visual presentation on "Lightening for the Radio Amateur".

Afterwards, Don Green of the EMA announced that the National Weather Service would be holding storm spotter classes on March 25th at the airport.

SCARC Meeting of February 14, 2008

Meeting Call to order took place at 7:00 pm
No visitors were introduced. 17 members were present including one guest, Bob Wallace, KJ4AJR

President Bill Davidson, KW4J, announced the receipt of 2 new membership applications - Lee Crever, N8MHC and Hub Harvey, N4HUB. Both were elected to full membership.

Vice President Jim McLester, W4YXU, mentioned the upcoming programs.

No minutes from he previous meeting were read since they are available on the club's website.

Treasurer Jack Evans, KC4PZA, announced that the club has received 3 applications for the upcoming ARES class. He also announced that the Fleagate raised $628.00 for the club.

Jack, reported the following balances in the club's bank accounts:
Checking - $79.61
Savings - $1,950.53
Repeater - $919.08

He also gave a status report on Lee Aured, KI4NMD who will be coming home next Wednesday after a short stay at the Lakeshore Foundation.

President Bill Davidson passed around 2 publications for reading (Hamsay Magazine & Alabama ARES Update). The Alabama ARES Update contained a long article concerning the tower work done at the Shelby County EMA by the members of SCARC. He mentioned that the next VE test would be Sunday, March 2nd at the BARC headquarters.

Bob Thomas, KC4AF, told about his recent trip to Tuscaloosa to view that club's repeater controller.

Jack Evans, KC4PZA, had nothing to report concerning the Red Cross's move to another location.

John Wilder, WB4CCQ, thanked Marcus Thomas, KF4YHP, for his work on the towers at the Shelby County EMA headquarters in Columbiana.

Bill Davidson presented John Murphy, KA4ZXL with a plaque honoring him for his work with the club as ARES net manager since 1988. John was also designated as Associate Web Master.

Bob Thomas reported that the Fleagate was a success and has requested that future Fleagates begin at 10:00am vice 8:00am. He also suggested holding a silent auction for any goods donated to the Club.

Alex Davies, W4AVD had no report concerning Field Day. Bill Davidson reminded the Field Day Committee that Field Day is about four months away and that they should begin preparations. Alex (along with Marcus Thomas) mentioned that he is in the process of securing two large coolers for Field Day.

Secretary Frank Hoult, KI4VVI reported that ARRL will not charge the club for his label order and that he has mailed out a few letters & applications to former club members. That order is expected around March 1st.

Bob Thomas suggested that we mention membership to all hams using our repeater who are not current club members.

John Outland, K3FP announced that there will be a party honoring Pete Sides W4AUP on his 100th birthday. That party will be held in Montgomery on April 12th from 2 - 4 pm.

A motion was made, seconded and passed that the next meeting on February 14 be held at the Shelby County EMA.

John Murphy gave a demonstration of ham software on his laptop computer.

Web master- Rod Scott, N1YZ, reported that he is working on a new preamble for the ARES, Tuesday Night Net and also on a new net control page.

AD Hoc Committees
EMA construction - Rod Scott, N1YZ, re-emphasized the Saturday work party.
Tail Gate - Bob Thomas, KC4AF, reported that the "fleagate" is still scheduled for for Feb 2nd @ 8am. Coffee and donuts will be served.
Membership drive - Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, reported that the mailing labels have been ordered and that he is currently negotiating with ARRl over the price of the labels.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, was elected as the new club Secretary, replacing Jim Rogers, who recently resigned.

Bill Davidson, KW4J, reported that the Boy Scout Merit Badge expo will be Saturday, January 26th at Oak Mountain.

Bill also mentioned that ARRl will be holding ARES courses in the future. Those courses are tentatively scheduled to be held in Helena on March 22nd and 23rd.

Jim McLester, W4YXU, gave a talk and presentation concerning the construction of PC boards.

The meeting concluded at 8:35pm.

SCARC Meeting of January 10, 2008

The following minutes were provided by our secretary Jim Rogers W4ATK, who has povided execellent notes for our earlier meetings.

Unfortunately, Jim has resigned as Secretary due to an overcrowded personal schedule. We will miss him and his contributions. Thanks Jim, for all that you have done for the Club!

Minutes of the meeting of January 10, 2008
The meeting was called to order by the president, who initiated the introductions and welcome to visitors.
The Vice President reported on the program for the next meeting.
The Treasurer reported the savings account has on deposit $1372.31. The checking account rests at $14.61. The repeater fund stands at $241.05.
The secretary had no miniutes of the previous meeting.
The MEC reported on activities surrounding the vhf nets and the appointment of NCSs.
The President reported on the blog.
There were no communications read.
The VEC coordinator was not present, but the president reported SCARC will continue testing on even months, the _____ friday of the month at 6:30 PM at the Red Cross office.
Red Cross Liason had nothing to report.
EMA Liason requested authorization to purchase materials for the EMA tower(s) not to exceed $25.00.A motion was made by Rod, N1YZ, and seconded by Alex, W4AVD to authorize the expense. The motion carried.
Webmaster, N1YZ reported on web improvements. There was discussion about improving the calendar and perhaps video/audio recording of the meetings and that being placed on the website for those who cannot attend our regular meetings.
Unfinished Business – more discussion on the tower(s) at EMA
Tailgate Report was given by Bob Thomas, KC4AF – the fleagate will be held the 1st Saturday in February at Joe Tucker Park beginning at 8 am.
No Field Day report was given. The president suggested that ICS format be adopted at Field Day as a training exercise. Alex continues to lobby for Orr Park in Montevallo as a field day site.
Membership Drive = will produce a mail out to all licensed amateurs in Shelby County.
The Shelby County EC made presentations to Jack Evans, and John Wilder and discussed plans for the AREC course.

First Blog Posting

Hello to all! This is my first attempt at a blog posting, so be patient. Hi.

Future postings will contain useful items such as the minutes of our past meetings and anything else that may be of interest. For instance all members are cordially invited to the Christmas party Thursday December 13 at the Shelby County EMA in Columbiana. There will be a pot luck dinner supplemented by a roasted turkey from the fabulous Spanos twins! (Way to go, Charles and Mike.)

You may have noticed that we added a calendar of events to the top menu. It shows most of the planned events for 2008, including the annual Tailgate at Joe Tucker Park on Feb 2. Keep an eye on this feature as we intend to update it as events allow.
