March 27, 2008 Minutes

Many thanks go to our fine Secretary - Frank Hoult KI4VVI for his dilligence and detail for ensuring the accuracy of the Club minutes!

Call to order was announced at 7:00pm No visitors were present.

Jim McLester, W4YXU, Vice President, announced that the program for the April 24th meeting is scheduled.

Jack Evans, KC4PZA, Treasurer, announced the following account balances:
Checking - 4102.37,
Savings - $2,595.53 ($465.00 of that amount is for the ARECC course) leaving a net balance of $2,130.53.
The special repeater fund balance is $919.08.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, secretary, announced that the March 13 minutes are available on the club's website and on paper.

MEC - Rod Scott, N1YZ, announced the formation of a committee to co-ordinate the move to the new Red Cross location and asked for volunteers.

Jack Evans announced that the red Cross will pay the club for all abandoned equipment ($659.95).

Bill Davidson, KW4j, president, announced that BARC needs volunteers for their Hamfest on May 3rd & 4th.

Bill also mentioned that there is new D-STAR software available to members on the internet at www.K4DSO.com

One new member, Russell Thomas, KV4S, was voted in as a new member.

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, VE co-ordinator, announced that the next licensing exam will be held at the SCARC headquarters on Friday, April 4th at 6:30pm.

Jack Evans, Red Cross liaison, announced that the move to the new location in still scheduled for April, but the exact date is not known at this time.

Rod Scott, web master, announced that John Murphy, has done allot of excellent work on the club's website.

Rod had no updates on any EMA construction.

Bill Davidson announced that Joe Ford will be the chairman of the 2008 Field Day. Joe announced that team leaders would be appointed at the next SCARC meeting. A change of venue for this year's Field Day was voted upon and passed. The new location will be at the EMA headquarters in Columbiana.

Bill also announced that the 2008 QSO party will be held June 7th. The club will be using the radios at the EMA headquarters. He asked other members to volunteer to go to other counties out of our area and set up base stations during that time.

Bill also announced that the new Red Cross location would be suite 5 & 6 at the South Lake Shopping Center on Valleydale Road.

John Outland, K3FP announced that the 100th birthday party for Pete Sides will be held May12th. Bus service to Montgomery will be available at 12:00 noon. Call Dave Sisco for more information at 822-3440.

A discussion of the VOAD followed.

Steven Moss announced that the Search & rescue practice drill for April 5th has been cancelled. He also announced that the Diabetes Bike Ride is still scheduled for April 26th and volunteers are still needed.

Bill passed around a list of current paid members and announced that all members who have not paid their dues by April 1st will be dropped from the club's roster.

The meeting adjourned at 7:55pm followed by a presentation by Jim McLester on "Digital Circuit Design (After you build it).

SCARC Minutes March 13,2008

The meeting came to order at 7:00 pm and the attendees intoduced themselves.

One visitor, Ed Manley W4AGA

Jim Mclester W4YXU, VP, TOld that the subject of the next program would be about digital circuit design. The following month's subject would be about antennas.

President Bill Davidson, KW4J, spoke in behalf of the Treasurer, Jack Evans, KC4PZA, who was absent. He reported the following balances
Savings $2,005.53
Checking $144.61
Repeater $919.08.

He also mentioned that memebers who have not paid their dues are now delinquent and will be dropped April 1.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, Secretary, told that the previous meeting minutes are on the club's website and that he had a paper copy for anyone to read.

Rod Scott, N1YZ, MEC, reported that some 20 members have signed up for the ARECC course so far. He also mentioned that he was expecting visitors from the CFlhoun County ARC and from ALERT. He so solicited ideas for a simplex net.

Bill Davidson passed around asked the club to update their E-mail addresses and passed around copies of th eAlabama ARES, the Tuscaloosa ARC (Hamsay) newsletter and a copy of the SC ARES net website.

Ed Manley was voted in as a new member. (Welcome aboard, Ed!)

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, reported that the next license exam would be April 4th. Due to the Red Cross projected April 1 move, the test venue may change. (Check 146.98 for details.)

Bob Thomas, KC4AF, reported that future repeater repeater improvement plans are estimated as $1500 for a back-up repeater $4500 for duplexers and a controller.

Bill Davidson reported that the anticipated 4/1 mover by the Red Cross is still on. The address is Suites 5 & 6.

Rod Scott, webmaster, praised John Murphy for his work-in-progress on the club's web site.

Bill Davidson alerted the members that the Field Day is coming up soon. He asked for a volunteer chairman. No one volunteered. Past FD problems were discussed. Joe Tucker Park was voted to be the FD site.. The FD organizational chart was discussed.

Ed Manley invited the club to join the BARC and/or the Zamora Shrine unit for Field Day but the Club voted to decline both gracious proposals.

John Outland K3FP spoke about the purpose of Field Day.

A lengthy open discussion about Field Day in general took place.

A motion to use the ICS format was passed.

A motion was passed to table the Field Day organization and planning until the next SCARC regular meeting.

Frank Hoult reported that the current membership drive has been completed. Bob Thomas mentioned that he deputize some members to solicit new members. Bill Davidson asked for all current members to "talk up" the club to other prospective members.

Bill Davidson suggested that the club abandon the rf cables when the Red Cross moves to their new location but transferthe antennas. No proposal to do this was brought to the membership but
it was tacitly agreed to do so.

John Outland mentioned that there would be a birgthday party for Pete Sides at Montgomery on 4/12. Bus service will be available.

Other hams of note:
Mike Ferguson passed away but the date was not mentioned.
Claude Grey is now in an assisted living facility

Steven Moss reported the following sevice events:
Storm Spotter school on 3/24
A diabetes bicycle run on 4/26
A search & rescue practice on 4/5.

SCARC Meeting Notes - February 28, 2008

Call to order was made at 7:00pm by Jim McLester,W4YXU, Vice President

1 visitor, James Niven, KI4BRE was present.

VP Jim McLester announced that tonight's program would be presented by Rod Scott, N1YZ. He also announced that next month's program would be about Digital Circuit Design and the following months program would be presented about antennas. that program would be present by Charles Spano.

MEC (Rod Scott), announced details abut the upcoming ARECC-01 class to be held at the Helena Public Library on March 29th & 30th.

Treasurer Jack Evans, KC4PZA, announced that we have 3 new members to sign up: Bob Wallace, KJ4AJR, Ron Arant, N4PHP, and our visitor, James Niven, KI4BRE.

Joe Ford, K4NVJ, VE coordinator, reported that the next SCARC testing date would be April 4, 2008.

Savings account - $2,030.53
Checking account - $84.61
ARECC-01 fund - $200.00

Repeater fund - $919.08 Bob Thomas, KC4AF, repeater committee, reported that he and his group[ are continuing work at the repeater site.

Red Cross Liaison, Jack Evans had nothing to report.

Shelby EMA liasion, John Wilder, WB4CCQ, thanked the EMA for allowing us to use their facilities. He also asked for volunteers and that the EMA needs another HF antenna.

Rod Scott, Web master, he is continuing to update our website. He had nothing to report on recent EMA construction.

Frank Hoult, KI4VVI, membership drive committee, reported that he recently mailed out 100 form letters and applications to prospective members. He also thanked Rod Scott for updating the membership page of the club's website.

Jim McLester announced that membership dues are due by April 1st or those members will be dropped from the club's rolls. He also announced that Ed Boutwell, W4ZSB, recently resigned as chairman of the Field Day committee and that a replacement would be needed. The motion for a replacement was tabled until the next meeting.

Ed Boutwell announced that Lee Aured, KI4NMD was still at home and that he was now able to communicate on the 2 meter band.

Ron Arant announced that on March 5th there would be an earthquake drill held in washington DC. at 11:30 am central time. He asked all club members to monitor 14.320 & 14.330 during that drill.

Steven Moss, KB4FKN, announced that on April 5th, there will be a Search & Rescue drill and that on April 26th there would be a Diabetes Bike Run held at 8am.

The club broke for intermission at 7:30pm. Rod Scott gave a visual presentation on "Lightening for the Radio Amateur".

Afterwards, Don Green of the EMA announced that the National Weather Service would be holding storm spotter classes on March 25th at the airport.
